Whereas our Confession is about what we believe, our Covenant is about what we promise to do and how we promise to live. To put it differently: the one is about convictions and the other is about commitments. This is why our Confession reads “I believe” and our Covenant reads, “I will.”
Due to the covenantal nature of church membership, we refer to these commitments as “membership vows.” When a new member is received at COTK, he stands before the congregation, reads them aloud, and signs his name at the bottom of the page.
The text of our Covenant is as follows:
On this day, ___________, in the year of our Lord 2026, we thank God that you have been moved by the Holy Spirit to enter into covenant with Church of the King Sacramento. Having adopted her confession of faith and having agreed to commit yourself to the mutual edification of her members, you are now requested to answer sincerely the following questions.
Do you promise to attend this church's worship services unless providentially hindered, to worship the triune God of the Bible only, to honor his name, and to avoid all idolatry?
Do you promise to rest and refrain from all unnecessary labor on the Lord’s Day, giving due place to the works of mercy and necessity as the Lord provides, knowing that the Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath?
Do you promise to love, honor, and submit, in the Lord, to the leadership of this church; and to participate to the best of your ability in the government of the same?
Do you promise to give with a cheerful heart the tithe that God requires, and to leave room for additional freewill offerings as the Lord may lead?
Do you promise to neither marry nor give in marriage outside of the Christian Faith, and to honor the sanctity of marriage and the institution of the family?
Do you promise to resist and oppose the practices of this world and the sins of this generation: adultery, abortion, pornography, homosexuality, transgenderism, pedophilia, sex-trafficking, and all other detestable practices that are contrary to the Word of God?
Do you promise to love, lead, and instruct whatever children God may give you in the fear, nurture, and admonition of the Lord, providing them with a Christian education, and including them in the church’s two sacraments of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper?
Do you promise to engage in the work of the Great Commission as Christ himself commands; and to pray and work toward the day when the knowledge of the glory of the Lord fills the earth as the waters cover the sea?
Do you promise to guard and maintain the unity of the Spirit among the members of the Body of Christ; so that if you wish to transfer your membership, you will seek guidance from the elders, obtain their blessing, and depart with the peace of Christ?
