Continuing a short series of messages on James for reformed churches we come to the command to show mercy because God has been merciful to us.
James gives some tall commands and simple illustrations so we can learn the truth that Paul teaches in Colossians 2:6 to walk in the same faith by which we were saved.
James shows that being quick to hear and simple obedience provide the sure foundation for our Christian life, just as Jesus shows at the end of the Sermon on the Mount.
Along with the challenge to show mercy James uses the simple analogy of looking in a mirror to teach how we should respond to what we clearly see in God’s Word. He then discusses the rich man and poor man coming to church to test how serious we are about showing mercy without being partial.
